"Joining In/Staying Out"

When I first read this assignment I tried to think about all the groups that I have become a part of over the years. The most obvious, obsessive one that I could think of with an iconic logo would be Tory Burch.

Anyone who knows me, knows I'm completely obsessed about Tory Burch. I have jeans, sweatshirts, shirts, bags, flat shoes, wedges, heels, and boots with the logo obnoxiously represented somewhere on the material. As a member of the Tory Burch craze, it all started with her signature ballet flat. Many girls here at Roger Williams has this recognizable shoe and I am proud to say that I am apart of this community. The logo of two "T's" has an unspoken meaning among people who where the shoe. When I was at an airport in California, my grandmother, my mother, and myself were all wearing this shoe. It is not about the comfort of the shoe, but more the recognizable logo the brand has.

A group that I do not belong to is the Snuggie community. I refuse to buy a blanket with sleeves. I see the usefulness behind the product, functionality while being warm in a blanket, however I will never join this group.

Over the summer I was looking through my mom's Boston College apparel catalog and saw that even Snuggie's can be customized into collegiate print. Snuggie's are now made in kid sizes, for dogs, as well as for the couple for one giant lovable Snuggie. I however will not subscribe to this community. I am sure this product is well worth the price and is certainly iconic, I have been able to easily point out Snuggie's on such places like airplanes and trains. This product is definitely a craze that has exploded recently. I chose to not be a member or a follower of this community!

"The Pretty Good Problem"

As stated in Buying In, something that is remarkable is something that must stand out from the crowd and not be "invisible."

My most recent remarkable purchase would have to be the Kindle. I bought it for a birthday present for my Mom this past year. The Kindle is a reading device that is all electronic. You can buy and download books to the device instead of buying paperback books from Barnes and Noble or renting books from the library. What I thought was so remarkable about this product is the fact that it's convenient especially when traveling. When I went to California this summer, instead of bringing multiple books, my Mom, who is an avid reader purchased books on her Kindle which not only saved time, but space as well.

The Kindle would be a remarkable product because it was the first of it's kind. It's only $140 dollars compared to the iPad which is $300 that can also have novels downloaded to the device. The maker, Amazon is a reliable company and is easy to use especially when downloading books. So far this remarkable product has not had any problems and is still used today.

"Huh?"

I also recently purchased the September issue of Shape Magazine. On the cover was Kristen Bell and I am a big fan. This is probably the only reason I bought this magazine because normally I would stick to my monthly Cosmo.

In this magazine, an article stated that 2,300 calories was the equivalent to 1 pound. This really made me say "huh?" Did the author of the article mean to say that if you eat an additional 2,300 after the recommended 2,000 calories a day you would gain an extra pound? There was no credit given that I could see to support this fact. I was just very surprised finding out this information.

Recently Purchased

I work at Island Outfitters in Newport, RI and have worked there since March. We sell items such as Lilly Pulitzer, Vineyard Vines, as well as premium denim jeans. I decided to take advantage of my discount that I have at the store and buy some jeans.
The jeans were originally $189.00, but with my discount I was able to pay a significant amount less. This made my purchase justifiable to me, because not only was I saving money, but the jeans were petite and I didn't have to spend more money on getting them hemmed! I know I will get a lot of use out of the jeans and am happy with my purchase!
